Sony Launches New Camera Grip And Wireless Speaker In The U.S.

You know your tech means business when its very name says “serious.” Or something close to that. Anyway, the Sony SRS-WS1 Immersive Wearable Speaker is now widely available for purchase the United States following a brief period of limited retail availability in December.

It is joined by the GP-VPT2BT, a new portable camera grip designed for a wide variety of filmmaking scenarios Sony made the announcement earlier today, noting that both devices are targeting cinema aficionados and customers with a vested interest in powering highly immersive entertainment experiences. The WS1 is quite literally a speaker that you are supposed to wear.

On your shoulders, to be exact

Doing so will provide you with a level of surround audio Sony says cannot be emulated using any other more convenient audio setup. Naturally, this is the type of tech that is just ripe for being outclassed by something much smaller and convenient further down the road, but that future may not be as close as one might have wanted.

In the meantime, the SRS-WS1 will set you back $299.99 plus applicable sales tax. Whereas the GP-VPT2BT camera grip has an MSRP of $140 and will be available for purchase from all of the company’s stateside distributors by the end of January.

Sony Announces Long-Rumored Drone Venture Under Airpeak Brand

As one of the most diversified technology companies in the world, it is almost surprising that Sony hasn’t yet financed a serious drone venture, at least not in its number one area of expertise. Which would be the consumer electronics market, of course.

Well, that finally changes today, and in perhaps the least dramatic way possible. As Sony’s long-awaited announcement of a consumer-level foray into the world of drones appears to be a carbon copy of numerous predictions on the matter that various industry analyst have been freely sharing since at least late 2017.

To start, the Tokyo-headquartered company will be organizing the entirety of this endeavor under a new consumer drone brand called Airpeak. These aren’t completely uncharted waters for Sony, mind you, as evidenced by the existence of Aerosense.

This similar-sounding name deonotes another drone venture Sony has already been pursuing for several years in partnership with Austrian robotic specialists at ZMP.

Except that partnership had nothing to do with consumer tech and was instead focused on terrain surveying and general-purpose SaaS offerings aimed at enterprise clients and governments. With Airpeak, that niche focus is about to change in a big way, with Sony confirming plans to cater to a number of content creator demographics with its incoming aircraft.

The first Airpeak drones are expected to launch and release in the United States in the second half of 2021.

Sony Introduces Spatial Reality Display For Next-Gen Design Apps

Sony Electronics has a new technology promising to usher in a new era of design apps. It’s called the Spatial Reality Display and is based on Sony’s previously introduced Eye-Sensing Light Field Display that the company already showcased at this year’s CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, back in early January.

The whole point of the tech is to make prototyping of complex 3D models and visual effects, especially those meant to move, i.e. animations, much easier than what has been the case so far. A lot of it is powered by the so-called high-speed vision sensor which tracks eye position in a three-dimensional space in order to render the most accurate, believable image possible, while requiring as little of the creator’s effort as possible, at that.

This is all without any use of artificial reality or virtual reality headsets, mind you, which is what makes this display a rather unique offering across any industry. Its rendering algorithms are baked in on a hardware level, with the product itself offering 15.6 inches of LCD real estate diagonally.

The SR Display can already be ordered from Sony Electronics and its official distributors in the U.S. It’s priced at $4,999.99, whereas Canadians will be asked to part with $6,649.99 CAD in exchange for one of these hi-tech designer tools.

PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility Explained Just Ahead Of Release

Sony certainly took its time with explaining the backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 5 but it finally came around to doing just that, with barely a month left ahead of the console’s official release in the United States.

The company clarified the PS5 feature that allows it to play PS4 games in a rather low-key manner, choosing to do so via a new support page instead of a more widely publicized announcement. In any case, we now know that the PS5 will be able to play nearly every PS4 game ever released, which makes for a last-gen library spanning more than 4,000 titles which have been released for the current-gen systems since 2013.

And much like the PS4 Pro was capable of boosting certain games up to 4K, the PS5 will be able to boost even more of them to 4k, 60fps gameplay. The exact list of those will depend on a given game’s developers, i.e. their willingness to optimize their previous releases for the new system.

Of course, all of Sony’s own first-party games for the PS4 are among those that will benefit from the PS5 jump the most. As for the PS4 games *not* compatible with the PS5 whatsoever, the list includes only 10 releases, all of which are rather niche offerings, with the exception of Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, a diorama-styled game that is a rather curious item to be included in such a group anyway.

The PSVR games? Although the system will not support the last-gen camera, it’s still going to support theĀ  games, so a “hey ho” for that.
